Kingston Carpet Cleaning Health and Safety Policy
Kingston Carpet Cleaning is committed to providing carpet, rug and upholstery cleaning services in a manner that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, customers, visitors and the wider public. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks, preventing accidents and ensuring safe working practices at all times while we operate in homes, offices and commercial premises.
Our Health and Safety Commitment
We recognise our responsibility to maintain a safe and healthy working environment and to comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and regulations. Our management team is responsible for implementing this policy and for ensuring that health and safety considerations are fully integrated into the planning and delivery of our cleaning services.
We will continually seek to improve our health and safety performance through regular review, training, monitoring and feedback from staff and clients. Every employee is expected to take reasonable care of their own safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.
Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety within Kingston Carpet Cleaning rests with senior management, who ensure that adequate resources are allocated to support safe working practices, training and equipment. Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day to day implementation of this policy, including briefings, checks and monitoring of work on site.
All employees have a duty to follow safety instructions, use equipment correctly, report hazards and incidents promptly, and cooperate with managers in maintaining safe standards. When working at a client site, our operatives must also respect the specific safety rules and instructions that apply to that location.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Before carrying out carpet or upholstery cleaning, we will assess the risks associated with the work. This includes the assessment of chemicals and cleaning solutions, electrical equipment, trip hazards from hoses and cables, manual handling tasks and any specific features of the property such as staircases or confined spaces.
Where necessary, we will undertake site specific risk assessments and implement appropriate control measures. These may include using warning signs, restricting access to work areas, planning safe routes for hoses, ensuring adequate ventilation, and agreeing with the client how the work area will be used while cleaning is in progress.
Chemical Safety and COSHH
Kingston Carpet Cleaning uses professional cleaning agents designed for carpets, rugs and upholstery. All substances are selected and used in accordance with applicable safety regulations. We follow Control of Substances Hazardous to Health principles, including maintaining safety data sheets, labelling containers correctly and storing chemicals securely.
Our team members receive training on the safe dilution, application and disposal of cleaning solutions. Personal protective equipment, such as gloves and eye protection, is provided and must be used whenever required. We also ensure that products are used in a way that minimises the risk of skin irritation, respiratory issues and environmental impact.
Use of Equipment and Electrical Safety
Our cleaning machines, vacuums and other tools are maintained in good working order and are regularly inspected and tested in line with manufacturer guidelines and relevant safety standards. Only trained personnel are authorised to operate our equipment.
When working at client premises, we take care to avoid overloading sockets, running cables across walkways without control, or using equipment in wet areas unless it is specifically designed for such use. Cables and hoses will be positioned and secured to reduce trip risks and to allow safe movement around the site.
Manual Handling and Physical Safety
The handling of machines, water containers and furniture is a key part of carpet and upholstery cleaning. We provide guidance on correct lifting techniques and the use of handling aids where appropriate. Heavy items will not be moved unless it is safe to do so and, where needed, more than one operative will be assigned to the task.
Our team is instructed not to attempt to lift or move items that are beyond their capability or that could cause damage to property or injury to themselves or others. Where furniture or obstacles must remain in place, work will be planned to reach and clean areas as safely as possible.
Client and Public Safety
While carrying out cleaning work, we take reasonable steps to protect clients, their families, employees and any visitors to the property. This includes using warning signs, verbally advising clients about wet floors or damp carpets, and limiting access to areas where cleaning is taking place.
We will agree with clients in advance on any special considerations such as children, pets, vulnerable persons or busy foot traffic areas. Our operatives will keep work areas as tidy as possible and will remove equipment and waste promptly on completion of the job.
Training, Information and Supervision
All staff receive appropriate health and safety training as part of their induction and on an ongoing basis. This includes safe use of machinery, chemical handling, manual handling, personal protective equipment and emergency procedures. Additional instruction is provided when new equipment or techniques are introduced.
Supervisors monitor work to ensure that safety procedures are followed and that any concerns are addressed quickly. Where necessary, refresher training will be provided to maintain high standards of safety awareness.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
Any accident, near miss or hazardous occurrence must be reported to management as soon as possible. Incidents will be recorded and investigated so that root causes can be identified and corrective actions taken to prevent recurrence.
Our staff are briefed on what to do in case of fire, electrical faults, chemical spills, injury or sudden illness while working on site. This includes knowing how to raise the alarm, when to stop work, how to evacuate safely, and how to seek appropriate medical or emergency assistance.
Policy Review
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly and updated whenever necessary, for example following changes in legislation, introduction of new equipment or processes, or after any significant incident. We welcome feedback from employees and clients on how we can further improve the safety and wellbeing of all those affected by our carpet and upholstery cleaning services.
By working together and following the principles in this policy, Kingston Carpet Cleaning aims to deliver high quality cleaning services while maintaining a safe and healthy environment for everyone.
